The masculine factor
In almost 50% of cases, a masculine factor is implicated in infertility, and in 20% of cases, is the sole cause. This is why partners must always be assessed. This problem is often due to a decrease in the number and quality of spermatozoa contained in the ejaculation fluid. Inflammation, infection or the presence of a varicose vein in the scrotum known as varicocele may be responsible. However, it is not uncommon to find that there is no obvious cause for a decline in semen quality.
The term azoospermia is used to refer to spermatozoa-free ejaculation. This situation may arise because of an obstruction, the congenital absence of the excretory ducts or failure of the testicles to produce spermatozoa.
