Dr Gabriel de Candolle obtained a state diploma in medicine followed by a doctorate at the Geneva Faculty of Medicine in 1984. He started to train in general surgery before opting for gynaecology and obstetrics. He learned his specialisation at the Geneva Maternity Hospital, and then at Morges Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital in London where he acquired basic skills in fallopian tube microsurgery and IVF (In-vitro fertilisation).
He returned to the maternity sector at the HUG (Geneva University Hospitals) where he became senior clinician and then deputy physician. This is where he developed surgical endoscopies (hysteroscopy and laparoscopy), focusing primarily on the surgical repair of the fallopian tubes. He opened his consultancy in 1992. He currently practises most of his hospital work at Beaulieu General Clinique. He is a consultant and is in charge of teaching at the HUG. Dr de Candolle has a FMH (Swiss Medical Association) qualification in gynaecology and obstetrics with a secondary specialism in reproductive medicine. He is involved in numerous societies in the field of reproductive medicine and surgical endoscopy. He has been Assistant General Secretary of the IFFS (International Federation of Fertility Societies) since May 2007 and a member of the SSMR (Société Suisse de Médecine de la Reproduction Swiss Society for Reproductive Medicine) Committee since the autumn of 2007.
He is mainly interested in infertility treatment, reproductive medicine and, more particularly, in reproduction and endoscopic surgery.
