After having obtained a diploma in medicine at the University of Geneva in 1983, Dr Nicole Fournet Irion did most of her training in the United States. With the aid of a Fonds National Suisse young researcher scholarship, she embarked on two years of basic research in neuroendocrinology at the Universities of Florida and Yale. After training in gynaecology and obstetrics at the John Hopkins University, she completed her specialist training with a fellowship in gynaecological endocrinology and infertility at UCLA. In 1992 she returned to the Maternity sector at Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG) (Geneva University Hospitals) where she worked for 5 years as senior clinician.
Having set up in private practice, she worked in conjunction with the in-vitro fertilisation centre at the Champel-Elysée Clinic. Dr Fournet has a FMH (Swiss Medical Association) qualification in gynaecology and obstetrics with a subsidiary specialisation in gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine. She is a member of several scientific societies in Switzerland (SSMR), Europe (ESHRE) and the USA (ASRM). In addition to her work as a practitioner, she retains a keen interest in clinical research and collaborates with the Reproductive Medicine Unit at the HUG in clarifying the mechanisms involved in the age-related loss of fertility.
