Awarded a doctorate in animal physiology at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris in 1989, Dr Philippe Renard completed his training as a reproductive medicine research scientist in Japan. The recipient of a scholarship awarded by the "Japan Society for the Promotion of Science", he worked on gamete conservation in a Tokyo university. He returned to France in 1992 and was head of research for 4 years in a laboratory attached to the CECOS (Centre d'Etude et de Conservation des Oeufs et du Sperme Humain – Centre for the Study and Conservation of Human Eggs and Sperm) at Rennes. He went on to work in an INRA-associate laboratory, was awarded a diploma in biology and molecular genetics before continuing specific training in the techniques of medically assisted procreation (MAP) in 1997. He subsequently joined a Centre for medically assisted procreation in Grenoble where he was also responsible for the creation and management of the gamete and embryo cryopreservation laboratory. In 2002, he was involved in setting up a new Centre for medically assisted procreation in Naples, which he managed for 3 years. A member of ESHRE, he is particularly interested in embryology and new MAP techniques, working in conjunction with various centres in both France and Italy.
